About the Halifax River

The Halifax River is a coastal river, slow moving, brackish and completely within the realm of the coastal marine environment. Like the much longer St Johns and Indian Rivers, the Halifax runs parallel to the coastline before emptying into the sea at Ponce Inlet.

Only 25 miles long, the Halifax River begins and ends within Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet. It begins in northeast Volusia County about 10 miles north of Daytona Beach where Bulow Creek and the Tomoka River meet the Intracoastal Waterway.

To the north, the ICW becomes the Matanzas River as it enters Flagler County. To the south, in Volusia County, the ICW becomes the Halifax River. Nearby Bulow Creek State Park and Tomoka State Park are great places to see pristine Florida coastal habitat where tall sable palms grow amidst spanish moss covered live oaks.

As the Halifax runs south it flows right through the middle of Daytona Beach where you’ll probably cross it on your way to the beaches. The river continues south for another 15 miles, through Port Orange and Wilbur-By-The-Sea before reaching the Atlantic Ocean at Ponce Inlet. South of Ponce Inlet the ICW becomes the Indian River where it will continue all the way to South Florida.
